e is sky is a collective born out of these first collaborations between Melbourne based experimental composer CORIN, electronic-pop musician Sui Zhen and music producer Casey Hartnett. They create score and sound design to tell stories and convey moods, connecting with art, film, multimedia, cultural artefacts, places, spaces and people.

Where previously this music could only be heard via a location-aware app we now invite listeners to engage with the pieces outside of the gallery setting.



A Brief Chat /

During the recording sessions did you encounter any issue with your
equipment? If so, did this affect your approach to the recording session?

Not that I can remember.

Were the recording sessions long or short? Did the sessions go from afternoon - night or morning - afternoon?

Side A was recorded, arranged and mixed over consecutive Wednesdays in late August / early September of 2018 in a small home studio space in Footscray where Casey was living at the time.

Side B was recorded in a single day at Rolling Stock Recording Rooms in Collingwood. The month prior we spent several days chatting, playing music together, looking at tiny jpeg representations of artworks, deciding what instruments we’d use, and writing some simple ideas.

Do you remember if you ate a meal between recording?

In Footscray we often got coffee and food from a nearby cafe. Or sometimes we’d cross over the train tracks to Footscray’s CBD and get a Banh Mi.

How did the recording sessions function as a collaboration? Ideas,
melodies or improvisation?

We’d usually start with a small idea - some chords, a melodic phrase, or sometimes just a texture - and we would expand on this with an improvisational approach. The outcomes on side A are the result of numerous takes being stitched together - the composition and arrangement process continuing throughout the mix phase. Whereas the tracks on side B are live takes, with a more pure approach to improvisation.

Besides musicians, were there any other people/animals coming and
going from the studio?

In Footscray, a black & tan kelpie named Socks and a black greyhound named Eoin. Casey’s partner Emily, brother Monty, and other housemates.

What's your ideal listening space?

Large speakers, outdoors, with a small group of friends.

When the project was taking form, did you have any ideas how it should sound?

We had some ideas about how it was going to sound based on Becky’s brief from Art Processors. We knew that it had to be background music that would engage the listener but not overwhelm their experience. It made sense to make ambient soundscapes with different moods, textures and arrangements.

Do you remember if you were listening, reading or doing anything in particular that may have intentionally or inadvertently informed the way you played during the recording sessions?

I remember we spoke about Alva Noto & Ryuichi Sakamoto, who had an upcoming performance in Melbourne in October of 2018.

How much time was taken in the production, editing or rerecording of
recorded sessions? Did the sessions change much during this stage?

Sorry it’s been so long I don’t remember.
